We’re at the tail-end of strawberry season here in Ontario. Although my own strawberry hanging basket didn’t produce as many berries as I would’ve liked, I was able to reap the benefits at local farmers’ markets.
Strawberries rival citrus fruits for vitamin C content, and are packed with antioxidants too. Theyre low in calories and high in fibre, folate and potassium.
Look for organic berries (strawberries have tested positive for pesticide residues) that are red all the way to the tip, a sign that theyre fully ripe (strawberries wont ripen after picking). Beware of mould: It spreads quickly, so if youre not using your strawberries immediately, look through the container and pick out any spoiled ones. Plan to use the berries within a day or two.
