Lean and Green Probiotics

The germiest of germ season is upon us, so it seems like a fitting occasion to bring back the smoothie blog. Im a firm believer in fighting off illness with liquids: water, freshly pressed juices, water, herbal tea, water, and fruit and vegetable smoothies, of course.

Theres also something to be said for immunity probiotics. If you always get sick during a particular month, remember to start taking them a few months in advance to stave off sickness (for example, if youre prone to the flu in February, start taking a probiotic around October/November). And if you still end up getting sick, the symptoms are usually less extreme and the recovery is much quicker.

Look for probiotics in the refrigerated vitamin section they MUST stay cold! I like MegaFood MegaFlora Plus.

And while youre waiting for those probiotics to kick in, heres my favourite green smoothie as it appeared in the annual issue of Canadian Gardening.

(makes 2)
1 tbsp golden flaxseed
1 cup packed chopped kale
1/4 cup chopped pineapple, plus reserved juice
1 banana
1 cup unsweetened almond milk

Grind the flaxseed using a spice or coffee grinder. Combine the ingredients in a blender and purée until smooth.
